World Premiere with GIGATRONIK Involvement

Mercedes Benz revealed the “Future Truck 2025” at the IAA. With this, not only was an autonomously driving truck presented, but also the vision of a transport system for the future. GIGATRONIK supported the study for the implementation of the cockpit area as well as the user interface for the driver display and tablet computer.

The future truck combines state-of-the-art radar sensors and camera technology to create a highly intelligent system, the Highway Pilot, which drives the truck autonomously through highway traffic. This enables an entirely new way of working in the driver's cab of a long-distance truck. The driver becomes a transport manager, who can focus on administrative tasks and manage freight orders. The driver's cab of the Future Truck 2015 is designed accordingly.

Tablet computer as multifunctional HMI system in the driving work place

A large 12.4 inch tablet computer is flexibly mounted to the central console and becomes the central working tool for autonomously driven routes. The driver can adjust to a comfortable position to control the tablet with the seat that can be rotated by 45 degrees. GIGATRONIK developed this HMI system, which is adjusted to new conditions. On the independently configurable tablet display are apps for managing freight orders and for organising breaks. This way the driver plans the next stop at a suitable motorway station while driving and reserves in advance a parking space using the app to save time and stress. As the tablet is cross-linked with the vehicle, the driver can also view all essential driving data at any time. Events like traffic jams or a slow moving vehicle ahead can be displayed, so that the driver stays informed about the traffic situation. For self-driven routes, a special operating mode protects from potential distraction risks. The tablet replaces the usual switch terminals on the dashboard.

Fully graphical display instead of combined instrument

Additionally, the existing combined instrument has vanished in favour of a high-resolution fully graphical colour display behind the steering wheel. For this, GIGATRONIK has developed the display application for the vehicle and driving data. The diesel fuel status and AdBlue, as well as engine speed, are indicated on the left, the driving time on the right. In the centre, the speed is displayed in a digital view in addition to an analogue view with a stylised round instrument. If the Highway Pilot is activated, the displays are reduced to a minimum and the complete data appears on the tablet computer.

This way, there is a perfect coordination between the vehicle display, the tablet computer and a gateway computer. This represents the interface with the vehicle data and serves as gateway to cross-link the central vehicle with the display and the HMI tablet.

GIGATRONIK is responsible for including the gateway computer and the new instruments. The wire harness that has been completely changed by the new technology in the driver's cab area has been documented with the new CAD wire harness drawings.

Cross-linked sensors for maximum technical performance

Behind the Highway Pilot hides a concentrated maximum performance technology enabling the Future Truck autonomous driving independent from V2V and V2I communication. It is the result of combination of radar sensors on front and sides, a stereo camera behind the window pane and precise three-dimensional maps. In the high performance multi-core processor of the central computer the data of all sensors on board the Future Truck 2015 is fused and linked together. All sensors are cross-linked within a network and provide a complete image of the environment. All moving and stationary objects in the environment of the truck are detected.

The prototype already demonstrated the fascinating abilities of the Future Truck 2025 in the summer during test drives with speeds of up to 80 km/h in realistic traffic situations on a partial section of the highway A14 in Magdeburg. At the IAA Utility Vehicles trade fair from 25.9 to 2.10 in Hannover the same vehicle showed its fascinating interior and exterior design.
